In the workshop, Grade 11 students are fully engaged in hands-on exploration of Topic 4: Properties of Materials with a focus on timber. Working with scrap wood and only hand tools, they are honing their understanding of material properties through real-world application. Students carefully assess the grain, density, and flexibility of different types of timber, learning how these characteristics influence the wood’s behavior under stress and during shaping. Using saws, chisels, and sandpaper, they refine their craftsmanship, developing both technical skills and an appreciation for sustainable practices by repurposing discarded wood. This immersive experience brings the theoretical aspects of material properties to life, fostering a deep connection between design thinking and practical problem-solving.
